True Gretch
"That woman from Michigan." ~ pg. 9
Gretchen Whitmer—adoringly referred to as "Big Gretch" in these Detroit streets—is the trailblazing Governor of Michigan and a proud Democratic. True Gretch is a political memoir written with Whitmer's sense of humor, wit and straight-to-the-point style. In less than 200 pages, she tells a candid account of her remarkable life and career, including decisions made during the pandemic, public showdowns, the kidnapping assassination plot and her opinion on parting hair in the middle.
"Get shit done." ~ pg. 112
I am already a supporter of "Big Gretch" but reading True Gretch made me aware of certain laws and confirmed that the State of Michigan is currently under good leadership with her as Governor. I thank her for rising in opposition. For being brave enough to share her deepest secret to protect women's rights and freedom. For doing the best she could during a pandemic while being bullied, threatened, questioned and ignored. Gretchen Whitmer comes from a long line of public service; she is most certainly making her family and constituents proud.
"...an unremarkable moment in one person's day might feel like a life-changing event for another." ~ pg. 41
True Gretch may be a quick read but I felt inspired after finishing in just one day. She stands true to her beliefs, finds the good in people and makes an impactful difference in the community in which I live. The lessons within span from the secret to dealing with bullies to power colors. Whether or not you are a politics junkie, I am confident you will gain something valuable from reading this nonfiction book. If nothing else, you will laugh at her funny tactics, marvel at her strength and gain insight into the challenges that Michigan has faced.

Such Charming Liars
"There's a certain kind of bond that got imprinted on us at a young age in an extreme situation, and...maybe it stuck." ~ pg. 74
Mother-daughter grifters? Heists and con artists with a history? Yes please!
For the longest, it's only been Kat and her mother Jamie. Except that time when Jamie was married for 48 hours in Vegas to a con man named Luke and Kat had a stepbrother, Liam. Now Jamie is a jewel thief and vows to live a straight life after one last job. Kat has figured out a way to tag along. Neither mother or daughter expect to run into Luke and Liam...it's been twelve years!
"Because the thing about breaking points is, you don't realize you've hit yours until you're already well past it." ~ pg. 188
Kat and Liam find themselves in a pickle. One witnesses a murder. The other tries to stop a disaster while crushing on the mark's nephew and dodging a killer. They can't trust anyone except each other...but they're both very charming liars so can they really?
Karen M. McManus does not miss! When it comes to young adult mysteries, she knows how to draw readers in with charming relatable characters, unique storylines and realistic dialogue. There is hardly any fluff between the pages. Clues are dropped making it easy to figure out the mystery but it's still entertaining.
"I've lost track of what letter I'm on at this point, but I might as well call this Plan H, for Hail Mary." ~ pg. 225
I read most of Such Charming Liars in a day. Even though it is meant for a younger audience, I was all tangled up in the schemes on a lazy Saturday. This new novel is a great buddy read with the teenager in your life, Bookhearts!

The Collected Regrets of Clover
"Grief is just love looking for a place to settle." ~ pg. 304
Clover Brooks was exposed to death at age five. She witnessed her kindergarten teacher drop dead and lost both parents. After her grandfather who raised her dies alone, Clover becomes a death doula. She ushers people peacefully through the end of life. And she does it well. Maybe too well.
Clover spends so much time with the dying that she doesn't have time to live herself. Until a feisty old woman's dying wish encourages Clover to chase a love story. The cross-country trip allows Clover to reflect on romance, friendship and what she really wants out of her own life.
"Be cautiously reckless." ~ pg. 268
Even though The Collected Regrets of Clover is told in a heartwarming tone, the topic of death is heavy. It surrounds Clover and consumes her thoughts, actions and feelings. The most unique part of her job as a death doula is notating last messages of clients as they were dying, which fall into one of three categories: advice, regrets or confessions. I won't spoil the novel any further but romance works itself into the picture too.
"Was it possible that our encounter on the library steps was...a meet-cute?" ~ pg. 34
The Collected Regrets of Clover was highly recommended by a Bookheart. She never steers me wrong with fiction so I knew this would be a page-turner. What I didn't expect was for onions to be cut up and for my eyes to sweat. This novel dealt with grief in such a unique way that was unexpected and greatly explored. It is written so beautifully clever!
There is a reason The Collected Regrets of Clover was nominated for two (2) Goodreads Choice Awards: Best Debut Novel and Best Fiction in 2023. Don't sleep on this one, Bookhearts! Read it now; you won't regret it. In the meantime, I will be on the lookout for more books by Mikki Brammer since this debut earned every bit of 5 🖤.

Here One Moment
"Chaos theory is the idea that a tiny change now can result in a large change later." ~ 30%
If you knew your future, would you fight fate? On a short domestic flight, something extraordinary happens. Passengers are told cause and age of death. For some, their death is far in the future over the age of 100. But for a select few, their predicted deaths are not far away at all and quite tragic.
"The Death Lady" becomes famous when a few months later, one passenger dies exactly as she predicted. Then two more passengers die exactly as she said they would. The remaining passengers from that remarkable flight begin to worry, panic and fight fate. Here One Moment is told in alternating chapters as it follow the different lives testing destiny.
"How many coincidences before you start to wonder?" ~ 90%
I have enjoyed books written by Liane Moriarty so I knew Here One Moment would be worth the read. Her books all have a common theme of death and illness. How we accept a diagnosis, how it affects the person and their loved ones and finally grief. I knew what I was walking into by reading the advance copy of Here One Moment. I don't necessarily agree with it being labeled a thriller but it's certainly not chick lit.
What I didn't expect was the multitude of characters and individual storylines. It was so hard to keep up! At one point, I wrote a list on a sticky note because my annotations and highlights were not enough. But when the sticky note was full, I gave up and just kept reading along. Never mind that I could half remember who was who. This took away from my reading experience.
"You never know what your last words are going to be, so try to choose them all wisely." ~ 49%
The premise was very interesting; I understand the follow-up was necessary to the storyline and built suspense. It was just too much going on and too long (almost 500 pages). I recommend Here One Moment for readers that like a complex story told from multiple points of view. It is not light reading so wait until after the summer unless you want to read about death while lounging around the pool.
Happy Early Pub Day, Liane Moriarty! Here One Moment will be available Tuesday, September 10.

The Accomplice
"People kill themselves working jobs they hate—it's a long suicide." ~ 12%
Let me start by saying the multitalented Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson has no limitations. I love how he tries any and every avenue of the entertainment business: music, television and now literature. This new fiction debut titled The Accomplice is co-written by mystery author Aaron Philip Clark. It introduces readers to Nia Adams, the first Black female Texas Ranger.
Nia knows the dangers of the job. After all, she has always dreamt of becoming a Texas Ranger even though she was born in New York. Like any other job, there are politics and risks. But she has never encountered a criminal like Desmond Bell, a vet turned thief that steals the secrets of the rich and blackmails them for millions. When Desmond steals from the Duchamps, the wealthiest most powerful family in the country, Nia's investigation might be the end of her life and career.
I was around page 66 when I realized the action been jumping from page one! Then it slowed down and I grew a bit bored of the cat-and-mouse game. The story lost the suspense and cruised to a blah end. Perhaps it would translate better on-screen. Since The Accomplice was just okay, I would still recommend that mystery readers try it. You may find it holds your attention longer than it did mine.
Happy Early Pub Day, 50 Cent and Aaron Philip Clark! The Accomplice will be available Tuesday, September 3.

I Am Maroon
"Armed struggle is never undertaken lightly." ~ pg. 94
Russell Melvin Shoatz II was a gang member in Philly starting at age 11. At 23 years old, his life changed after hearing Malcolm X speak. He became a soldier in the most militant unit of the Black Liberation Army and a community organizer. Shoatz was convicted to life in prison following a coordinated attack on the Philadelphia Fairmount Park Guard Station.
But if the government—under its watchful eye of the Black Panthers and Black militant groups—thought it could keep Shoatz caged, then they fucked around and found out. He escaped state prisons twice, making him a living legend. Hence the nickname "Maroon," once used to honor runaway slaves. He meticulously planned, succeeded and never gave up the fight for freedom. He was a prisoner for 47+ years, spending 22 of those years in the Hole (solitary confinement) which prompted an international campaign for his freedom.
I won't spoil this true story. You just have to read it yourself when you're in the right mind space. It will take you on an emotional ride while reading. I felt sympathy, empathy, anger, vengeance and hope all within its 350 pages.
"They had branded our civil war a Civil Rights Movement, and there was nothing civil about it at all." ~ pg. 147
I Am Maroon reads like an action movie! I was all in, hanging on the edge of my reading chair or sitting up in bed, holding my breath. This was especially true during the retelling of his escapes or planning. In one particular section, I felt like I was standing right next to him in the cold contemplating the next best step literally. If Shoatz's words were this profound, imagine how intense and captivating his conversations were. The thought brings chills.
Bookhearts, I recommend this memoir! It is not your ordinary story of a Black Panther as I assumed upon downloading the advance copy. It is the true uncensored story of a political prisoner, the system and survival of the mind. Shoatz's story of justice and redemption is worth reading.
Happy Early Pub Day to Russell Shoatz! I Am Maroon will be available Tuesday, September 3.

Series Sunday: Marinated Conditions
(Eugeena Patterson Mystery #7)
My Series Sunday pick is Marinated Conditions, the seventh book in the Eugeena Patterson mystery series by Tyora Moody. Eugeena Patterson-Jones is back from her honeymoon. Now it's time to help plan her daughter Leesa's wedding. With just three months to go, there is plenty to do. Starting with taste-testing the wedding reception menu.
Series Sunday is a bookish meme hosted by Literary Marie. I encourage all of my fellow book bloggers and bookhearts to play along.
- Read an installment of a series.
- Share your review/recommendation below.
- Include the title, author and series name.
"It's always the ones closest that you have to watch." ~ pg. 88
Eugeena and Leesa meet for lunch at the wedding caterer's food truck. The author writes the scene so descriptively, that I could practically smell the BBQ through the pages. I actually paused, ordered a half rack of baby-backs then continued reading while I ate the finger-lickin' ribs. Back to the story...
When a competitor food truck's owner is found dead, Leesa's wedding caterers/friends become suspects. Usually Eugeena is the one spearheading the sleuthing but Leesa is determined to find out who's framing her friends for murder before her wedding is ruined.
"We give them life and raise them, but they grow into their own person. Sometimes very different from us." ~ pg. 137
This installment was a bit different because the mother and daughter team up to find the smoking gun...and I loved it! More of this duo in the near future please. The thin line between amateur sleuth and not getting in the way of the police investigation was almost crossed. As a result, Moody did a great job bringing more of the minor characters to the forefront.
As I mentioned last week, I am binge-reading most of Tyora Moody's cozy mysteries. They are perfect for light reading in the summer when you want the right touch of whodunit. Now that I am all caught up on this series, I so look forward to the next release!

A Pair of Wings
"I can see you handle the unexpected well." ~ pg. 102
A Pair of Wings is an adventurous novel inspired by the true life of pioneer aviatrix Bessie Coleman, the first Black woman pilot. The story begins when Bessie spots an airplane flying over her head as she is working the Texas cotton fields. She knew it was freedom in those wings.
Bessie moves to Chicago then to Europe, where she learns French and earns her pilot's license. She learns death-defying stunts from French and German combat pilots. While there is no prejudice in the air, there are challenges on the ground that Bessie grapples with all while planning a show in the sky that will awe the world.
A Pair of Wings is inspiring, insightful and beautifully written. It celebrates the life of an aviation icon. The author is an airline captain that draws upon her personal experience for the finer details of this new novel based on true events. I can appreciate her storytelling without using jargon and details that would confuse a regular reader. She could have easily went nerd girl but kept it relatable and interesting. Hopson also does a great job of capturing life in the 1920s. Worth the read!

Worst Case Scenario
"It would be an extinction-level event, sir." ~ 21%
Tragedy in the air. A pilot suffers a heart attack at 35,000 feet. The commercial plane has a full flight of passengers as it crashes into a nuclear power plant. Emergency responders, power plant employees, neighbors, friends, families, teachers and brave ordinary people are all affected. If you cannot image the domino effect of this tragic event, it is laid out within the pages of a new thriller titled Worst Case Scenario.
One of the stages of copyediting that I offer to clients is whether the material is appropriate for the intended audience. Readers should not feel confused or the need to look up every other word/phrase. Authors should not dumb down content and risk insulting the reader. In this book, thank goodness for the "dumb firefighter questions" because I would have been lost with all the jargon.
"Emotions and Logistics" ~ 54%
There is a thin line between experience/knowledge and talking above the average person's understanding. It is more than apparent that Newman has a background in aviation. This serves her well in writing gripping stories. But make it understandable for those of us with no idea of the logistics behind a plane crash or nuclear events.
Unlike Newman's other novels that I categorize as hits, Worst Case Scenario was a miss. I was lost because of the language. I grew bored because of too many details. And I couldn't keep track of the many characters. If you are new to T.J. Newman, do NOT read Worst Case Scenario first as it might turn you off. I recommend her other novels.
Happy Early Pub Day, T.J. Newman! Worst Case Scenario will be available Tuesday, August 13.

Never Saw Me Coming
"So, as a Black woman, I'm incapable of being smart?" ~ pg. 129
Never Saw Me Coming is a true crime story of a young Black woman who created a scheme to manipulate the banking system out of millions. Tanya Smith was a computer-savvy wiz. As a young girl, she used technology to acquire the phone numbers to celebrities such as Michael Jackson. She gradually worked her skills and deposited money into her grandmother's bank account. Seeing how unsuspecting and easy it was, she took bigger risks. By the age of 18, she had stolen millions in cash. Eventually she is caught, sentenced and released thanks to her own brilliant defense.
I struggled through reading Never Saw Me Coming. I questioned the credibility of the narrator within the first few pages. In fact, I was tempted to stop reading but I wanted to see just how outlandish the story would get. Simply put, it was not believable. It was contradicting. It was not factual—and I base this on my own personal knowledge of working in financial institutions from the teller line to a Banker and management position to back office operations.
I am in disbelief that parts of the story and name drops were approved in the editing process. Nonetheless, this is not what bothered me most about Never Saw Me Coming. It was the author's lack of remorse and pride of her financial crimes. She was bragging about defrauding banks pocketing millions of dollars, writing about an extravagant lifestyle while complaining about her and her family being harassed by the FBI as if it were unwarranted.
I could have tolerated this memoir if Tanya's story ended with using her smarts for greater good. But nope, it ended with more selfish pride and an unforgiving air of "look what I got away with." All I can say is wow unbelievable!

Series Sunday: A Spicy Predicament
(Eugeena Patterson Mystery #6)
My Series Sunday pick is A Spicy Predicament, the sixth book in the Eugeena Patterson mystery series by Tyora Moody. Eugeena Patterson-Jones did not intend to spend her retirement years as an amateur sleuth. But here we are! Perhaps being a schoolteacher for thirty years made her interested in learning little-known facts about people. But as the quote above says, it appears to be her mission.
Series Sunday is a bookish meme hosted by Literary Marie. I encourage all of my fellow book bloggers and bookhearts to play along.

"It appears our mission at this stage of our lives involves helping people who need it. Location doesn't seem to be a factor." ~ 41%
Eugeena and Amos are finally heading to their honeymoon. As part of a surprise, Eugeena is treated to a concert starring one of her favorite singers, also a childhood friend. Cinnamon invites the newlywed couple backstage after the show. The fun reunion quickly turns into a murder scene. Now the planned romantic getaway takes a backseat to saving her old friend's life.
"I hadn't been to a repast that didn't offer a plate of fried chicken, string beans, macaroni and cheese, a Hawaiian roll and a hunk of pound cake." ~ 69%
I love culinary cozy mysteries! And right now, Tyora Moody is my preferred author since I'm binge-reading most of her books. Super easy reading with the right touch of whodunit, not so obvious clues and characters that make you smile. I even took a liking to the suspects which made the mystery a wee bit harder to solve. Eugeena and Amos may be a long way from home but their investigative skills are sharp as ever.
I immediately started reading the next book so that tells you how much I enjoy this cozy mystery series. I recommend for light reading, Bookhearts!

Two women. Two families. One life-changing mistake.
Nicole's life is a mess. Her marriage is falling apart and the arrival of a baby girl did not bring joy to the home. Especially because as she grows, there is less of a resemblance to her husband. Nicole's friend Victoria lives a seemingly perfect life in Spain. When they reunite, the visit takes an unexpected turn. A shock diagnosis reveals a mistake that changes their lives but could save a family.
If that synopsis sounds deep, it is. I am trying not to spoil the plot while letting you Bookhearts know it is worth reading.
"This whole nature versus nurture thing is such a bitch." ~ 77%
Heart-strings? Tugged. Eyes? Teary. Emotions? Pulled. These are my immediate thoughts upon finishing When You Were Mine. It is the type of book that you cannot help but to imagine what if. I sincerely do not know what I would do in this situation. This made the story all the more interesting.
It may seem like a tearjerker of a read but it really is balanced. The opposite types of marriage, the difference in setting and the different household roles all contribute to a well-rounded story. Beautiful writing, Emma-Claire Wilson, on this powerful novel of motherhood, friendship and what family means.

Lit Tidbits: One-Star Reviews
Hey, Bookhearts! Lately my choices in books have been wack. Read the pithy reviews below of my recent one-star reviews.
Title: Rosewater
Author: Tade ThompsonPublished: February 2017
Pithy Review: Chosen for July's Sistahs Be Readin' book of the month, this science fiction went way over my head. The writing style of incomplete sentences, alternating timelines from 2066 to 2042 to 2045 back to 2066 then to 2043, unnecessary plots and descriptive paragraphs wore me out. By the end, I didn't care about the town or its residents, the main character, his love interest or the damn alien. How this novel won numerous awards and high ratings is beyond me!

Pithy Review: I still vividly remember the first Holly Denham novel I read because it was so different in style. Ever since, I have been looking for the next great book composed of e-mails. When contacted to review this new book, I was geeked! No, it is not the style I was looking for but it was by the same author. Which made my reading experience even more disappointing. It is meant to be a feel-good comedy romance. Not once did I LOL.

Pithy Review: The best way I can describe the latest Nicola Yoon's novel is it was unexpectedly off. At one point I was ready to throw the library book clean across the room if it mentioned police brutality one more time. Enough already! I got it the first fittylem times! Considering I enjoy her other books, I kept reading until the bitter end. And now my entire opinion of the author has changed. Was this really her intended message about, and to, Black people?!
