Pithy Review: Newlyweds search for the house of their dreams. When they visit a manor that once belonged to a renowned psychiatrist who vanished without a trace four years earlier, a winter blizzard traps them. The wife finds audio tapes of every patient that lead to the truth of the doctor's mysterious disappearance. I download from Kindle Unlimited from a friend's recommendation. It kept my attention although I figured out the mystery fairly fast.

Title: Uphill: A Memoir
Author: Jemele Hill
Published: October 2022
Pithy Review: Atlantic journalist and former ESPN SportsCenter co-anchor overcomes a legacy of pain and forges a new path in life despite life's uphill battles. You may remember her as the Black woman who called President Trump a "white supremacist." Tuh—damn the death threats; Jemele faced tougher things while growing up in Detroit and intergenerational trauma. Her unmistakable voice in the journalistic world, online and in the memoir is unapologetic yet eloquent.

Title: Spare

Pithy Review: During my free Audible trial, I decided to listen instead of reading Prince Harry's memoir. I could listen to his voice all day and not get distracted, taking in all the shade, shame, sadness and smiles he has endured from childhood to present. It is revealing and raw. Think of the documentary/interview x 10.

Title: Chaos Theory

Pithy Review: Am I officially over YA books? I loved Nic Stone's other writing and appreciate she tackled a sensitive subject matter and formed a romance between two teens. One teen is a certified genius living with bipolar disorder and the other is a politician's son running from addition and grief. All the makings of a Mental Health PSA in literary form written for a younger audience.

Title: Nightcrawling

Published: June 2022
Pithy Review: Named Nominee for Best Fiction 2022 and Best Debut Novel 2022, this novel is about a young nightcrawling Black woman exposed as a key witness in a scandal within the Oakland Police Dept. A lot of quotable passages but the story left my memory before it was even returned to the library. I am more than impressed that the author is only 16 years old...go girl!

Title: Hey, Lover
Author: D.L. White

Pithy Review: Whatever Bookheart D.L. White is putting down, I'm picking up! I'm a believer of second chance love stories and soulmates. I also strongly believe we are in people's lives for a season or a reason. It just so happens that the first go-round for Malik and India failed nearly a decade ago but now the chance to rekindle romance is theirs.

Pithy Review: Nominated for Best Mystery & Thriller 2021, highly recommended by a Bookheart, free on Kindle Unlimited AND a domestic thriller? I clicked download so fast. Adam Wright lives with face blindness; he cannot recognize friends, family or his own wife. After ten years of marriage, this is an anniversary he will not forget. There were fitty-lem red flags yet I hadn't put the pieces of puzzle together until 89% through. Now that's a good twist!

Lit to Movie Review: Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.

"Good posture now makes for a good figure later." ~ pg. 29

Almost 12-year-old Margaret Simon moved to a new city and begins to question adolescence, friendship and growing into a young lady. She meets friends; girl talk revolves around cute boys, first kiss, increasing busts, bras and getting their first period (hilariously pronounced #menstrooation). 

A school project leads Margaret to religion. The different kinds, practices, appearance, prayer and Sunday routine. Her parents let her decide for herself while her grandparents prefer Margaret shares their religious beliefs. She learns that some people go to confession, while others worship with vibrant singing, or visit the Jewish Community Center. 

There are so many religions but Margaret has her own special relationship with God talking to Him about any- and everything without claiming a religion. And this is what makes Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. a classic. Like all girls, she just wants to belong. Margaret is funny and keeps it real. Her thoughts and talks with God can be mature for her age but also full of innocence and logic. 

Chickadee and I read this book multiple times along with lounging in VIP seats at the theater opening weekend. Such a great cast and true to the book! I even bought and re-read from the hot pink faux-leather embossed cover special edition. Great Auntie Judy Blume wrote a character that was as relevant today as she was over 50 YEARS ago!

My Series Sunday pick is Misfortune Cookie, the ninth book in the Noodle Shop series by Vivien Chien. Ho-Lee Noodle House, managed by Lana Lee, is famous for its noodles and tea. But the setting in this latest installment takes place in sunny California where a restaurant convention is held. Lana Lee and sister Anna May are invited to stay at their Aunt Grace's posh rental.

Everything is peaches, cream and sunshine until Lana Lee witnesses an argument because a journalist and fortune cookie vendor. Later that night, a woman mysteriously plunges from the roof top. It happens to be the same journalist in the dramatic cat fight earlier but also Aunt Grace's friend. So much for a laid back vacation and restaurant convention...Lana must solve this mystery.

"I often didn't know my next step and I don't think that people—my family included—knew that I winged life more than my eyeliner." ~ pg. 113

Readers are introduced to a new colorful character: Aunt Grace. She serves "Rich Auntie" vibes with invitations to exclusive events, knowing key people in the city, living a single-with-no-kids life of luxury in California. All the more reason to dote on her nieces. I hope to see more of Aunt Grace!

This time, I learned more about Anna May Lee (Lana's older soon-to-be lawyer sister). I used to think she was an annoying tattletale in all of the prior books but now I understand her logic. She's healing from a breakup. She's studying and working hard toward her career goals. And most of all, Anna May cares for her little sister's safety. She only wants for Lana to make better choices.

The flow of Misfortune Cookie started off slow, picked up in pace, then slowed down to a slow cruise. Even though the suspect list was short, a lot of unnecessary clues were dropped. Or perhaps it's because I'm finally caught up on the series and have learned the author's style when it comes to whodunit. Either way, it was still a good read; just not the best choice for a fast-paced cozy mystery.

Everything's Fine

How often have you responded "Everything's fine." when everything is not fine? We either lie to ourselves that we are indeed fine or we don't want to worry someone about why we aren't.

On Jess's first day at Goldman Sachs, she is not thrilled to work with Josh, her white sparring partner from college. They bumped heads before and sure to bump heads again in the workplace. But when Jess finds herself being the sole Black woman on the trading floor, overlooked and underestimated, it is Josh that stands up for her and opens doors of opportunity. Like romance clockwork, their relationship turns to friendship then sparks fly. 

Considering the main character's professional situation, I thought I would relate to her. Welp, her actions squashed that comparison. The snap decisions, the overreacting, the need to talk but not listen made me dislike her within pages. The most annoying part is her saying, "Everything's fine." when she is literally drowning not asking for help. Perhaps the story would've been better if the focus was on Jess's mental health rather than an interracial relationship with all its politics.

There were so many red flags that pointed toward not reviewing this new book. Of my 673 Goodreads friends, not one has read, recommended or shelved this book. A blurb claims that Trial confirms Richard North Patterson's place as "our most important author of popular fiction." Yet I never heard of the guy before now. The final flag wave was that an older white man wrote a book featuring a Black 18-year-old (Malcolm) and his Black single mother who is a voting rights advocate (Allie). Out of curiosity alone, I gave it a try.

How did Patterson prepare to write from the perspective of a life he knows nothing about? Did he try to put himself in Malcolm's shoes? Did he research, wing it or rip from real news headlines? The more I read, the more off the mark it seemed. I began to side-eye something in every single chapter. The only other main character Patterson could possibly relate to was a young white congressman.

Maybe it's my harsh judgment. I don't agree with Malcolm's point of view being written by a polar opposite. Patterson doesn't know the feeling a Black mother gets when her son is driving while Black. When her son should be home and isn't answering the phone. How the son must feel when being pulled over by a white police officer and arrested for murder. How social injustices arise in a trial.

I could go on and on. It all boils down to me not liking the book at all, struggling to finish, wishing the author stayed in his lane. There is no shame in writing what you KNOW.

And yes, he covers everything and beyond what is in the title. It is not your typical memoir written in essay style but more like a peek into his journal, cooking a dish from his recipe book while he shares fond memories and journey to unconditional love. 

Why Fathers Cry at Night belongs on your shelf. It is personal. It is vulnerable. It is greatness.

In just 30 pages, we meet matriarch Eugeena—wife to Ralph the doctor and mother to three children. Her attempt to maintain peace reaches a breaking point when her teenage daughter is unexpectedly rushed to the hospital. How a family looks on the outside doesn't reflect what goes on behind closed doors. Great prequel to introduce the likable Eugeena Patterson. Give me more!

Eugeena Patterson #1

My 1st Super Series Sunday pick is Deep Fried Trouble, the first full-length book in the series. What a character Tyora Moody invented in Eugeena Patterson! She is a 59-year-old widowed retiree with grown children and three grandbabies. She's very active in the neighborhood watch association. It's an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and get to know new neighbors.

Then Eugeena stumbles upon her fussy estranged neighbor's dead body. And her daughter is the prime suspect! Determined to find her missing daughter and clear her name, Eugeena sorts through everyone's shady background. You can never really know who is living right next door.

Bookhearts know I love a good cozy mystery. The Christian fiction is not overly done. The woman sleuth role is not cliché but dare I say, Eugeena falls into solving mysteries faster than the police can. More time on her hands, more time to investigate. Especially when her daughter is involved.

This series is definitely added to my rotation. I'm looking forward to catching up!

My 2nd Super Series Sunday pick is Oven Baked Secrets, the second book in the series. Eugeena is not pleased about her next door neighbor, Louise, being sent to live in a nursing home. Without her fellow nosy neighborhood watch buddy, Sugar Creek just isn't the same. So she meddles into her adult children's lives while possibly finding love again at age 60. Until she stumbles upon a long forgotten murder case that may be related to friend Louise.

This mystery was a bit weak far as storyline; I was more interested in the personal lives of the Pattersons and minor characters. That alone is what kept me reading.

A Blended Family Christmas is another eShort in the series. Yes, I skipped over book 3 to read this because...why not? It only took a few minutes and available on Kindle Unlimited.

Eugeena is marrying her neighbor, Amos. Her family is happy to see the couple finally make it official and walk down the aisle. What is missing are Amos' two estranged daughters. At Eugeena's urging—being the matriarch she is—the daughters are invited to spend Christmas as a blended family.

Okay, maybe I should not have skipped ahead in the series. Just two books ago, Eugeena was married to Ralph. Then flirting with Amos in next book. Now talking marriage to Amos? I clearly missed something. Let me wrap up this Super Series Sunday review and continue in chronological order. Hopefully I am caught up by the summer when short story Falling For You Again and #6 A Spicy Predicament will be published. In the meantime, bookhearts, catch up too!

Noodle Shop #2

"Nothing like a little fictional drama to take you away from the real stuff." ~ pg. 11

My 1st Super Series Sunday pick is Dim Sun of All Fears, the second book in the Noodle Shop series by Vivien Chien. Ho-Lee Noodle House is famous for its noodles, tea and take-out. Lana Lee is a dutiful daughter working at the family's restaurant, even though she would rather have a "real" job.

Just when she lands an interview, her parents take off for an extended time in Taiwan, leaving Lana in charge. She knows nothing about running the place but there is no other person her mom trusts—and who's available. Then like a true cozy mystery, newlyweds in the souvenir shop next door are found murdered. With the help of roommate Megan and to the dismay of kinda-sorta boyfriend Detective Adam, Lana Lee pries into the case and ultimately solves it.

I learned more about the main character Lana Lee more in this second installment. Her logic, romance and family dynamic was explained in a show-not-tell way. I did not mind the story including personal life happenings with the mystery taking a backseat. In fact, I didn't even bother to figure out who the murderer was until around 80% through the eBook. And that's when it was a slow reveal until the last few pages and Epilogue. Good writing balance!

Noodle Shop #3

My 2nd Super Series Sunday pick is Murder Lo Mein, the third book in the series. My book binge continues. Lana Lee is officially the manager of Ho-Lee Noodle House. It is time for the annual Cleveland's Best Noodle Contest. Then a local food critic is found dead, face-down in a bowl of lo mein. Lana Lee along with boyfriend Detective Adam dig into the lives of everyone involved in the contest while saving the restaurant's reputation and her own innocence. 

This one is catered to the culinary cozy bookhearts with a surprise double murder. I like how Lana Lee and Megan brainstorm and sleuth their way through the mystery. Having a Detective for a boyfriend, being in a small community where everyone knows everyone makes it all the more personable. It has the theme of "There's a Murderer Among Us." I am definitely moving on to the next book...like right now.

Noodle Shop #4

"And the Oscar goes to..." ~ 88%

My 3rd Super Series Sunday pick is Wonton Terror, the fourth book in the series. I totally read this series out of order but they can all be read as standalone thanks to the background Vivien Chien writes in the beginning of every book. Promise you won't be lost!

Wonton Terror centers around another popular festival in Asia Village called the Cleveland Night Market. Lana Lee and chef Peter are running the booth when an explosion in a food truck kills one of the workers and injures several others whom were nearby.

Time for Lana Lee and best friend/roommate Megan fall into sleuth mode, against the constant advice of boyfriend Detective Adam to not get involved. They uncover family drama, angry customers and a slew of suspects until the surprising ending.

In the spirit of Asia Village, I dedicated an entire day to reading Wonton Terror and settled in with an order of fried rice. Is that lame? Ah well, it felt appropriate and kept my stomach from rumbling with every mention of delicious food mentioned in the book. Honestly, the food was what kept me reading. Wonton Terror is the weakest of the series so far. Too predictable. Nevertheless, place your orders (food and book) and enjoy!

My Series Sunday pick is 23rd Midnight, the 23rd book in the Women's Murder Club series by James Patterson & Maxine Paetro. Previously, Detective Lindsay Boxer put serial killer, master manipulator Evan Burke in jail. Reporter Cindy Thomas put Burke on the bestseller list by writing a true crime book about his case. But now an obsessed fan is playing copycat, killing women in every city on Cindy's book tour. Even worse, he is threatening Cindy's life.

"A god in his own mind. A monster in ours." ~ 62%

Women's Murder Club is one of the few long-term series that stays interesting. It follows the personal and professional lives of four (4) successful women, their spouses/significant others, children, murder cases and news stories. With every book, it somehow intertwines and they all work together.

Since 23rd Midnight is deep-deep into the Women's Murder Club series and references an old suspect, it cannot be read as a standalone. Your reading experience will be totally different. Patterson and Paetro makes a good point of introducing each main character but to fully understand the plot, at least read the previous three (3) books in the series: 22 Seconds, 21st Birthday and 20th Victim. Then you won't be so lost and can follow the story better.

I read 23rd Midnight as a buddy read with Chickadee. We make a habit of reading new Patterson novels immediately upon release. We separately read up to a certain chapter then discussed and shared theories. She usually solves the mystery first whereas I can sometimes tell the twist. With all its layers and multiple storylines, this was a perfect buddy read. We agree on the 4⭐️ rating. We agree loose ends were tied up but the ending left us wondering what is next. Chickadee and I recommend it for other bookheart buddies, book clubs or online groups that enjoy mystery series.
