Series Sunday: Egg Drop Dead

(Noodle Shop #5)

Series Sunday is a bookish meme hosted by Literary Marie. I encourage all of my fellow book bloggers and bookhearts to play along.
  • Read an installment of a series.
  • Share your review/recommendation below.
  • Include the title, author and series name.

My Series Sunday pick is Egg Drop Dead, the fifth book in the Noodle Shop mystery series by Vivien Chien. Yes, the fifth book so let me first explain. No, you did not read wrong. No, you did not miss the first four book reviews of this series. I am going about this backward. This series featuring a main character of color was recommended by Bookheart, Read in Colour. I immediately downloaded the first book of series but noticed a new installment just released. I am a sucker for reading books soon as published so I skipped ahead and borrowed it from the public library upon their reopening. Hence, why I begin at #5 Egg Drop Dead. Grab your own noodles and continue...

"...if you don't deal with your past, it's gonna come back and bite you in the bupkiss." ~ pg. 142

The Ho-Lee Noodle House is hired to cater a fancy, intimate dinner party by the pool. Unfortunately, their first-ever catering event turned into a murder scene when the nanny is found dead. With a house full of people, there is a long list of suspects starting with the party's host, Donna Feng. It is very suspicious that Donna asked Lana Lee to inconspicuously grab a thumb drive. Could it be a piece of evidence? Is there incriminating info on it? Who knows but Lana Lee intends to find out through her own amateur sleuth investigation.

"Ah, like a game of 'telephone.'" ~ pg. 172

I love series, especially featuring main characters of color in a foodie cozy mystery. Lana Lee is the type of heroine I like. She is not the average fly-by-night type of girl, runs a restaurant, tries to please her mother like any good girl does and is occasionally-kinda-sorta-seriously dating a dude that is described as handsome. Throw in a little comedy, sarcasm and intuition and she's a keeper!

Even though Egg Drop Dead did not wow me, I am still pleased with the writing, the well-paced unfolding of the mystery, the mix of suspects and mini twists. This is obviously the first book I have read by author Vivien Chien. I am impressed and definitely looking forward to starting this series from the beginning. But first, I am going to stay ahead since I received an advance readers' copy of Noodle Shop #6 titled, Killer Kung Pao. As a matter of fact, I am cooking pork dumplings for lunch and settling in to begin reading on my fully charged Kindle. Bookhearts, this is your cue to catch-up with me!
